Boy Scouts

The sound of the morning trumpets were blaring and as hundreds of flags crowded the field the national anthem began. Then the Boy Scout pledge.

Standing on stage I joined along. I've never been to a boy scout event, but was a girl scout and as the audience of 5,000 faced us, I proudly joined along.

The Scouts invited me to speak on stage Friday night and Saturday morning to the crowd about Soles4Souls. What a wonderful opportunity to share with a crowd of over 5,000. This video is from Saturday morning at opening ceremonies.

Earlier this year I received news that the Boy Scouts were holding their Jubilee, a major event that occurs only every 4 years with troops from numerous states, in Nebraska! Speaking on the phone with Soles4Souls Headquarters staff, they shared the wonderful news that the Boy Scouts selected us as their charity of choice and would be doing a major shoe drive. Meredith from Soles4Souls staff asked if I would represent them at this event and before she could finish, the phone conversation erupted with joy.

I arrived on Friday October 10th to get our trailer set up and meet the boy scout team. It just so happened 10.10.14 was also Soles4Souls day to go barefoot, which made for an interesting afternoon on the camp site.

No one gets to choose the conditions they end up barefoot in and I was not exception. I put on my warmest tights and layer upon layer with our official “Barefoot4Them” t-shirt provided by Soles4Souls. As temps dropped to the low 30’s, by the end of the night it was like walking on ice cubes, but very worth it!

We had a simple set-up right by the main stage. Our goal was to pack a hauling trailer as full as possible which sat right behind out tent.

Boy Scouts poured in Friday night and so did the shoes. The first night we collected over 1200 and enjoyed a fun concert from the band Hairball. I was able to meet the crowd and share about Soles4Souls.

Saturday morning was off and running early as shoes steadily streamed in by noon we were up another 1,000 pair. I was able to greet the crowd and share again about Soles4Souls.

After a 14 hour day of collecting, we finished at 4,170 pairs!!!!!!!! This is going to have such a tremendous impact, a great job to Janelle Ehlers and her family for investing so much time in making this shoe drive happen with the Boy Scouts!

The night wrapped up with the band Smashmouth and fireworks. My son was delighted because he was able to go on stage with the Smashmouth!

Backstage it was neat meeting an guitar 12 year old prodigy Aiden Fisher. This kid has a future, watch for him!

A huge thank you to the boy scouts for being so generous in hosting Soles4Souls as their charity. There are so many future leaders and kind young men paving paths through scouting. Go Scouts!
