86th Annual Black History Month Luncheon

In honor of Black History Month, I attended the 86th Annual Black History Month Luncheon and VIP Reception.   The luncheon was held by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.   The theme for this year was “Black Women in American History and Culture.”  The luncheon was not only a celebration of the contributions of African American women, but a celebration of the collective contributions that women have made to society.  It was an opportunity to acknowledge and give thanks to the efforts and sacrifices of so many.

I had an amazing time.  It was a truly humbling experience being in the presence of such accomplished women.  I had a chance to chat with Keynote Speaker, Dr. Johnnetta B. Cole, Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art.  She is truly a living legend.  I also met various politicians and public figures.  As a titleholder, events such as these are particularly important because they provide you with an opportunity to discuss your platform and community service initiatives with individuals that you might not otherwise come into contact with.  I can’t wait to attend next year.

Best,
