Camp ASCCA
As you all I know, I am a huge supporter of the Miracle League and Shane’s Inspiration—both organizations that make all-inclusive play possible. However, there are so many more organizations that have the same goal!
In elementary school, some of my absolute favorite memories were made at summer camp, whether it was a church camp, acting camp, or just a week away from home. I always knew the type of people that were at camp, but I never gave much thought to who wasn’t a camp. Children with special needs are often unable to attend summer camps because of medical needs and the special attention they often need. However, one organization in Alabama has made the dream of summer camp a reality for children and adults for special needs for over thirty years!
Camp ASCCA (Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults) is located in Jacksons Gap, Alabama. This extraordinary camp is well-known by “repeat campers” as the happiest place on Earth. This is due to the fact that the highly trained staff and camp counselors have the skills and resources needed to ensure that no camper is denied the opportunity to participate in camp activities. Children and adults participate in fishing activities as well as zip-lining, archery, canoeing, arts and crafts, play on a handicap accessible water slide and splash pad, ride horses, and participate in a talent show over a three-day span. On the last night, a camp-wide dance is held where participants have the chance to get “dolled up” and dance with all of their friends—both new and old!
Currently, our school is helping raise money for our Victory Class to attend Camp ASCAA in May. Today, we sold arm bands for a Zumba class to be held during P.E. time. I was so surprised at the number of students and the variety of people that want to help our Victory Class go to camp this year. Camp ASCAA makes a visible difference our friend’s lives, and we all know how important it is to them!
So often we take for granted life’s simplest pleasures, like summer camp! I hope that you all know how blessed each and every one of you are and take advantage of every opportunity you are given in this oh so wonderful life!
All my love,
Caroline

Trent’s favorite activity is the zip line!

Suzie and Jonteria are always one of the favorite acts at the camp talent show! They NEVER meet a stranger.
