How to Maintain Heathy Hair as a Pageant Girl

While competing in pageants, your hair takes a beating. Curling, straightening, blow-drying, coloring, and teasing are all part of the pageant game but it takes a toll on those longs locks.

Here are some ways that have helped me keep my hair health and happy throughout my years of pageantry.

Moroccan Argon Oil/coconut oils

Dry hair is definitely something that I have come across while competing in pageants. All of the hairspray and teasing powders tend to dry out your hair. This then can lead to breakage and overall damage to your hair.

Adding a hair oil to my post shower routine has be a lifesaver! After showering I comb through my hair with a wide tooth comb, take a generous amount of oil and apply it from ends to roots. Once I have the product evenly distributed through my hair I take my wide tooth comb and comb through my hair once more.

Since I’ve started using hair Moroccan hair oil my hair has become shinier and healthier than it has ever been before!

Hair Masks

I just started using hair masks this summer and let me tell you, they are a game changer! My favorite hair mask is the Greek Yogurt Hair Mask by Hask. The Repairing deep conditioner and the Smooth and Shine deep conditioner are two that I highly recommend after long pageant/appearance days.

Hask hair masks are affordable and super easy to use. All you have to do is apply all of the product from the individual packet into your hair, leave in for 5 minutes and rinse. That’s it!

After using, your hair is tangle free, soft and shiny!

Sulfate Free Shampoo and Conditioner

If Johnathan Van Ness from Queer Eye swears by it, it must be true! After switching to a sulfate free shampoo/conditioner my hair texture completely changed. My hair used to feel dry and frail but now it’s smooth, shiny and healthy.

My favorite shampoo and conditioner combo at the moment is OGX. All of their products are high quality, sulfate free and cruelty free. This brand is also super affordable and found at Target/Walmart.

Regular haircuts

It’s a common myth that regular trims help your hair grow but regular trims do help make your hair look and feel healthier. Especially when you have short hair like I do, regular trims are a must. Not only do trims make your haircut look more put together and clean but it helps maintain healthy hair.

Because I have a blunt cut bob I have to get my haircut regularly but for most of you pageant ladies with long flowing curls once a month is perfect to help keep your locks looking fresh.

Rest Days

Just like your body, your hair needs a day to rest. Especially when you are a titleholder and attending multiple appearances a week your hair needs a day without product, heat and teasing.

Take a day or two out of your week to let your hair relax. Put it up in a pony, let it go natural, or use a generous amount of that trusty dry shampoo and go with day two (or 3) hair.

I hope that these hair hacks help you tame that mane and help you achieve your #hairgoals!
