DC Heart Walk

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of all Americans? In fact, “heart disease” kills more women than all forms of cancer combined. And congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects. This knowledge, and the loss of my cousin Erick to congenital cardiovascular defects, influenced my personal decision to make the American Heart Association and its mission to fight heart disease and promote good heart health my own personal platform.

By participating in the Washington DC Heart Walk at Washington Nationals Stadium, I joined more than a million people in more than 300 cities across America in taking a stand against heart disease. The walk was very heavily attended- which is a great sign! I joined Deanna Linz's team, along with Miss International, Ashley Smith, and Gail Mates (the national spokesperson for the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” campaign).

Collectively, our team raised $500 which, considering we got a very late start together as a team, we were very proud of. We have already decided to start fundraising now for next year. We're also recruiting so if you'd like to make a difference to end heart disease we would love for you to join us!

I also enjoyed seeing Miss Teen DC International- Alexis Harvey, and got to hear Miss DC International – Chelsey Rodgers – the National Anthem. She is so talented! It was great to have a chance to catch up with everyone!

It was chilly out but we kept warm by walking and had a great time while working to promote the cause of the American Heart Association and heart health!
