Holiday Food Drive
One way that my community gives back is by collecting canned goods for our local food pantry. Every year our elementary school and high school students bring canned goods to donate. My school has an annual “White Christmas” muscial performed by our elementary students and then our Senior class has a Christmas play immediately following. Each student is welcome to bring as many canned goods as they wish to this event. As Juniors, it is our job to transfer all the goods to the food pantry. The boys in our class pulled up their trucks and we all helped load them up with all the goodies!
Since my class was in the 7th grade we would make shapes out of the pile of cans to help bring in the Christmas spirit. We started with a cross, then a Jesus fish, then three crosses and we have done crosses ever since. Next year we will be doing the Senior play, so we hope our under classmen will take over the tradition. There were at least 2,500 cans collected this year, all going to help our local food pantry serve people in need this holiday season.
Have an event coming up like a school play, holiday party or even a family gathering? Almost any event will work as a food drive, just ask people to bring a couple of cans along to help those in need. This would be a great way for anyone to get involved! Christmas is the season for giving!
